Submission Guidelines Themes

We're always looking for contemporary art and writing of excellence. Rhubarb is always looking for interesting and creative pieces from new and established writers, poets, artists, and photographers.

This independent magazine is designed to provide an outlet for the (loosely defined) Mennonite voice, reflecting the changing face of the Mennonite community, promoting dialogue and encouragining the Anabaptist tradition of reformation and protest.

Writing should be clear, stimulating and persuasive without being obviously didactic. Rhubarb publishes poetry of up to 30 lines, creative non-fiction and short fiction of up to 2,500 words and black and white art work including high contrast photographs that reproduce well in the magazine printing process.

Rhubarb also publishes humour, book reviews, commentary, issues analysis and articles related to the theme. Query first for submissions of non-fition as some of this work is solicited and/or assigned.

All submissions should include a short bio and the full name and address of the subscriber.

Contributions are welcome by surface mail or E-mail.

Coming up in Rhubarb-Issue #21, Spring 2009
IDesigning Mennonites II

Rhubarb will focus again on Mennonite Designers. The response to the first issue was very positive and we have another case of interesting characters to bring to your attention.

Coming up in Rhubarb-Issue #22, Summer 2009
IWar and Peace.

The first issue of Rhubarb was published in 1999 with “Peace” as its theme. To celebrate our 10th anniversary, the Mennonite Literary Society has invited founding editor Victor Enns to guest edit a special issue revisiting the theme – but with a twist. The theme this time will be “War and Peace” recognizing the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the continuing conflicts in the Middle East. Peace in 2009 seems more elusive now than it did in 1999 when the cover Rhubarb image was of an overgrown out-of-use runway once used to train fighter pilots.

Submissions of poetry, fiction and non-fiction of less than 2,500 words are being solicited from writers of Mennonite heritage or conviction. Some black and white artwork or photographs may be considered, but query first. The deadline is January 5th, 2009 for a June publication date. Payment is $50 for a poem or a story, upon publication. Email submissions are preferred and should be send to Victor Enns as a Word attachment to venns@mts.net. Hard copies can be sent surface to 200 Lenore Street, Winnipeg Manitoba, R3G 2C5.
